It’s been a rough week for many around the country and the Southeastern Conference certainly hasn’t been spared.

Following the unfortunate passing of Auburn legend Pat Dye earlier this week, news broke on Wednesday that Tennessee legend Johnny Majors has also passed.

Majors’ legacy on Rocky Top, in the SEC, and around college football cannot be summed up in a single post but just know he was one of the best ever to suit up and coach in the nation’s most storied college football conference.

As a player, Majors came as close as any Volunteer has ever come to winning a Heisman Trophy as he finished as the runner-up in 1956. As a coach, he led Pitt to a national championship before returning home to lead the Volunteers to three SEC titles and an overall record of 116-62-8 from 1977-1992.

In addition to his success leading his teams on the field, Majors had an outstanding coaching tree that features the likes of Phillip Fulmer, Jimmy Johnson, Jackie Sherrill, Jon Gruden, Kevin Steele and Dave Wannstedt, among many others.

One of the nation’s best active coaches is also a member of Majors’ coaching tree — Duke’s David Cutcliffe.

After hearing the news of Majors’ passing, the former Tennessee assistant coach and former Ole Miss head coach offered these comments on Twitter:

“When called early this morning that Coach Majors had passed away I was deeply saddened and frozen in thoughts and lessons learned from him over the 11 yrs w him. FB checklist, FB practice schedules, FB game mgmt FB habits all reflect the GREAT FB man & coach he was RIP JTM”
