One of the biggest areas for growth for Tennessee after last season was its defense.

The offense was there, but Tennessee had plenty of defensive lapses throughout the season.

This year, Josh Heupel has liked what he’s seen from his defense, especially some of his younger linebackers. With players like Elijah Herring, Arion Carter and Caleb Herring, Heupel has a bright future in the linebacker area.

On Wednesday during the SEC coaches teleconference, Heupel had high praise for his young linebackers as they manage Keenan Pili’s injury.

Agianst UTSA, Elijah Herring had a career-high 8 tackles on the game.

“Elijah, obviously, with the injury to Keenan (Pili) has been thrust into even more action,” Heupel said. “He’s handled it well and developed as a first-line player. Moved back to the second level when he got here. He’s smart, he’s instinctive, he’s physical and continuing to grow in his understanding of the game and our schemes and what he’s seeing on the other side of the line of scrimmage.”

Carter, a freshman, has also had a good start to the season, already earning a Freshman of the Week award.

“Arion, I would say the same thing,” Heupel said. “He’s in Year 1, a guy that’s done a really nice job on special teams. Does some really good things on defense, continuing to grow from the time that he’s gotten here. He’s been one of the most mature first-year players that I’ve been around.”

Caleb Herring is another freshman that Heupel is expecting to excel. He has already shown flashes, picking up a sack against UTSA.

“Caleb’s doing the same thing, man,” Heupel said. “He got nicked up in spring ball, but he’s long, he’s athletic, he’s competitive, he’s helping on teams, playing on defense. He’s going to be a really special player.”

Heupel is looking for solid production from his linebackers this weekend as they take on South Carolina.
