Hendon Hooker saw his college career suddenly halt against South Carolina in November as he suffered a torn ACL. The former Tennessee quarterback ultimately heard his name called in the 3rd round of the NFL Draft as he was selected by the Detroit Lions.

While it will be a while until Hooker finds himself on the gridiron as he recovers from his injury, that doesn’t mean that the rookie hasn’t played a part in training camp for the Lions, who have been steadily improving under Dan Campbell. Despite a 3-13-1 record in 2021, Campbell led Detroit to a 6-win improvement in his 2nd season.

According to Campbell, Hooker has been undergoing individual workouts while also participating in meetings with the other players.

“It’s around every other day, to see how that knee responds post-practice,” Campbell said on Sunday, according to MLive’s Kyle Meinke. “And we’ve got our training staff, our strength coaches that take him through a workout and it’s really scripted.”

The “script” has initially included about 30 plays, per Campbell, helping Hooker simulate an in-game experience. The plan is to eventually increase the workload as Hooker gets healthier.

“We just continue to build as he gets his conditioning up and the knee gets stronger. That’s about as good as we can do right now,” Campbell said.
