Tennessee asks for fans’ help to pay for new goalposts, gets absolutely roasted on Twitter
Tennessee had a celebration for the ages after beating Alabama in a 52-49 thriller Saturday. Volunteers fans at Neyland Stadium stormed the field and took down the goalposts. Now, UT athletics is using the celebration as a fundraising opportunity.
On Sunday, the official Twitter account of Tennessee football tweeted a link to a Volstarter page on UTK.edu asking for donations to help pay for the new goalposts.
Y’all remember how we tore the goalposts down, hauled em out of Neyland and dumped em in the Tennessee River?
Yeah that was awesome.
Anywho, turns out that in order to play next week’s game, we need goalposts on our field. Could y’all help us out? ? https://t.co/NSMoL3SzPX

While the goal was presumably to creatively encourage Vols fans to donate to the athletic department after enjoying a game that will be talked about for years to come, the tweet isn’t exactly going over well. As you can see below, many sports fans and media members are taking the tweet at face value, criticizing a well-funded athletic department asking for money after an instant classic.
Here’s a small sample of what’s being said:
This is what we call opportunistic fundraising.
Tennessee’s athletic department brings in $140 million a year. https://t.co/4iUSYqvsco

you have a $1.34 billion endowment https://t.co/xkThp8tHEl

only Tennessee could have its biggest win in 25 years and still find away to take an embarrassing L https://t.co/iOkv22Pq4t

Come on now…
I mock UT fans a lot but this is insulting to them. Let them enjoy the game without crying poverty when you make mega millions https://t.co/qhNtgydy4R

Is this real? You have a $130,000,000 budget. Get a new set. Problem solved. Good win. https://t.co/e1Wm7yUC1g

Hold on, hold on, hold on.
Not only is it ridiculous that a university with a billion dollar endowment is crowdfunding.
But if 6% of the project is funded with $10k…
Then @Vol_Football is saying they need $172,000 for new goalposts. https://t.co/COJTI82CFf pic.twitter.com/suFRQ9xfSO

While the tweet allowed many members of Sports Twitter to get their jokes off for likes and retweets, Tennessee is getting the last laugh as the No. 3 team in the country with an undefeated record after a memorable win over its arch-rival.
