Georgia football fans know the way to Jacksonville since they play Florida there every year in October. This year, they get a second trip.

Georgia is heading back to EverBank Field in Jacksonville on Jan. 2 to play Penn State in the TaxSlayer Bowl. The game starts at noon.  The Bulldogs also played at EverBank Field at the end of the 2013 season, losing to Nebraska.

There’s plenty of flux in the Georgia football program right now after the firing of Mark Richt and the hiring of Kirby Smart as head coach on Sunday.

Last Thursday, Georgia said that wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon would coach the bowl game. With McClendon taking the interim head coach role, Georgia said offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt and other assistants are expected to continue in their roles through the bowl game.

It’s uncertain if any of that will change this week.

Georgia was 9-5 in bowl games during the Mark Richt era, including a win over Louisville in the Belk Bowl in Charlotte last year. Richt originally said he would coach the bowl game after he was let go, but once the Miami job came available for him, he changed his mind so he could get to work in South Florida.

Georgia has only met Penn State once before in a bowl game and long-time Bulldogs fans remember it well.

It came in the Sugar Bowl after the 1982 season and it was basically for the national championship. Penn State came into the game ranked No. 2 in the country and the unbeaten Bulldogs with Herschel Walker were ranked No. 1. Penn State won 27-23 in Walker’s final game with the Bulldogs.
