There’s a reason some games are on major networks at prime time while others are shown only on one of the many pay-per-view or subscription channels in the dreaded noon slot.

Let’s face it. Some games are just bigger than others.

It might be because of the championship implications the game brings, or maybe it’s because of a good, old-fashioned rivalry. Either way, some matchups just have the magic.

Here are the games we think are shaping up to be the most exciting SEC West versus SEC West matchups in 2016:

ALABAMA VS. OLE MISS

When: September 17

Where: Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, Miss.

The opening week of SEC West versus SEC West play will certainly be a big one. Ole Miss has won the last two meetings, and both served as Alabama’s lone regular season loss. Last year’s loss didn’t keep the Tide from winning the SEC and national championships, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t sting. Especially after Rebels DT Breeland Speaks told ESPN that beating the Crimson Tide is expected at Ole Miss.

Rebels QB Chad Kelly racked up 341 yards and 3 TDs against the Alabama defense last season, and with Kelly returning to Oxford for his senior season, the Tide will have to find a way to shut him down if it wants to end the Ole Miss win streak.

TEXAS A&M VS. AUBURN

When: September 17

Where: Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Ala.

The Aggies and the Tigers have split the last four games. Both of these teams are looking to rebound from a disappointing 2015 season and insert themselves into the running for the SEC championship.

And no matter how you cut it, this game will hand one of the two teams their first SEC loss of the season, all but removing it from contention when you consider the other SEC West teams they will face throughout the season.

OLE MISS VS. LSU

When: October 22

Where: Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, La.

The Tigers were another team to pick up a loss against the Rebels in 2015. After dropping games to both Alabama and Arkansas, LSU struggled to get back in the flow of things, and Ole Miss took advantage of that.

LSU is hungry not to just beat the Rebels, but to devastate their SEC championship hopes. The Tigers will look for Death Valley to give them the edge in exacting revenge.

ALABAMA VS. LSU

When: November 5

Where: Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, La.

Alabama is currently on a five-game win streak in this series, but don’t let that fool you into believing this matchup isn’t as exciting as it once was. This is historically an even matchup, and although the Tide is on a roll, that could change at any time.

Last year’s loss to the Tide sent LSU into a tailspin from which the Tigers never recovered. And if LSU’s resident Mad Hatter Les Miles wants to be back on top in the SEC, he’ll have to pull some tricks against arch-nemesis Nick Saban. Not only is Saban’s defense looking dominant after the spring, but Miles’ offense still hasn’t seemed to find a solid identity.

But have no fear, Tigers RB Leonard Fournette is looking to bounce back against the team that dashed his Heisman hopes in 2015, and Miles always surprises us.

LSU VS. ARKANSAS

When: November 12

Where: Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville, Ark.

For the past two seasons, LSU has entered its game against Alabama highly ranked with national title hopes. And for the past two seasons, after losing to Alabama, the Tigers couldn’t pull themselves together to beat Arkansas.

The Tigers need to demonstrate to the CFP committee they can be consistent for the entire season, and they need to remain focused even when things get tough. This season’s matchup will be a chance for LSU to show it can beat its rival regardless of how the rest of the season has gone up to that point.

AUBURN VS. ALABAMA

When: November 26

Where: Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

This is one of those games where the records of the two teams entering the game mean nothing. The number of times the lower-ranked team in this rivalry has blocked the other from playing for a national championship defies odds.

In the past seven years, the Iron Bowl victor played for the national title six times. In 2014, the only year in the past seven that the victor didn’t move on to the championship game, it was because Alabama lost to Ohio State in the College Football Playoff semifinals. In 2013, it could have been either team playing for the title. No. 4 Auburn upset No. 1 Alabama in the faceoff, and the win boosted the Tigers to No. 3 and sent them to the SEC Championship Game. A win there over Mizzou led Auburn to play for the national title against Florida State.

This is always an exciting and memorable game (check out these videos if you don’t believe me), and 2016 will be no different.

MISSISSIPPI STATE VS. OLE MISS

When: November 26

Where: Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, Miss.

The Egg Bowl doesn’t always have national significance, but it does still have its own excitement. Last year, we saw the two best SEC quarterbacks — Dak Prescott and Kelly — square off against each other in a matchup for the ages. The Rebels came out on top to win their second straight in the series.

With Prescott in the NFL and Kelly returning to Oxford for his senior season, Ole Miss appears to have the upper hand. But in rivalry week, anything can happen.
