Questionable Calls

We’ll miss you, Les Miles

Les Miles’ time in Baton Rouge seems to be ticking away, but if this is his last year, college football will miss finishes like this. This moment is so distinctly representative of both Les Miles and Gus Malzahn that it hurts.

Miles and the Tigers got the ball trailing 13-15 with just over two minutes remaining. They tip toed down the field like it was covered in mines, avoiding danger at seemingly every snap. With a fresh set of downs, a timeout, and 30 seconds left on the clock, they were suddenly knocking on the door. After an overthrow, a sack, and a short completion in bounds, the Tigers looked to have squandered their chance. They lined up for a final play on fourth down which was, as expected, a complete mess. It resulted in a miraculous completion, but due to an illegal shift play, the Tigers would be back at fourth-and-11 with a live clock that had just one second left on it. This was the result:

This play pitted together two of the Football Gods’ chosen sons, and it came down in the whackiest way imaginable.

The punch that was not

Though this play resulted in an ejection, it’s about as questionable as it gets. Florida’s Brandon Powell was ejected from this game for throwing a punch, what it looks more like is some taunting and a flop by Tennessee.

Ejections

Mizzou takes out their frustration on Delaware State

Mizzou really played angrily against Delaware State, and it didn’t make a ton of sense. On this play, a fake punt when the Tigers were up 30, Mizzou decided to take it a step further with a helmet-rattling shot.

Etling gets speared

LSU quarterback Danny Etling was lit up on this play against Auburn, but he would return a few plays later. Though it was an awkward slide by the Purdue transfer, and he was past the line of scrimmage, refs thought that the helmet-leading spear tackle by Auburn’s Tre Williams was cause for an ejection

Bloopers

Big man hurdle goes terribly wrong

The South Carolina/U.K. game was everything we hoped it would be, encapsulated by tight end Hayden Hurst’s failed hurdle attempt. Welcome back, Muschamp, you were missed.

Man, Antonio Callaway had some weird fair catches

There was no phase of the game that Florida struggled with more than field position in their loss to Tennessee. This was largely due to some ill-advised fair catches by star receiver/return man Antonio Callaway.
