Deflategate, Spygate, Bill Belichick’s fashion sense, and Tom Brady’s ego have made the Patriots a very polarizing franchise. As such, the word “controversy” and the New England Patriots are often synonymous with each other.

This past Sunday, the Pats had the greatest comeback victory in Super Bowl History — as they erased a 25-point deficit en route to a 34-28 victory over the Atlanta Falcons.

The victory not only gives the Patriots their fifth world title since 2002, but it also allows for the team to visit the White House. This customary practice happens every year, and this will mark the first one under the Donald Trump regime.

Much like New England, Trump is seen globally as an extremely controversial and polarizing figure.

Multiple members of the team (Martellus Bennett, Devin McCourty) have already said they won’t visit the White House. A few more (Rob Ninkovich, James White) are undecided.

As it pertains to former Alabama linebacker Dont’a Hightower, he has decided to follow suit under Bennett and McCourty — and will bypass the chance to run elbows with Trump.

Per AL.com, Hightower admits he will not attend the team trip due to the fact he’s already been to the White House. As a member of two Crimson Tide Championship teams, Hightower visited Washington D.C. twice during Barack Obama’s presidency.

In 2014 with the Super Bowl-winning Patriots, Hightower interestingly enough decided to not return for a third trip. As such, he apparently feels as if two trips is more than enough.
