Tennessee head coach Butch Jones has had the good fortune of consistency at quarterback for the last three years under the leadership of Joshua Dobbs, but with Astro now in Pittsburgh, Jones must use this offseason to find his heir.

He addressed this and other questions during Monday’s teleconference.

How hard is it to start over at the QB position?
“I don’t look at it as restarting, we have some talented and capable individuals. I thought Dormady had a productive spring, Guarantano as well. Being able to watch Josh Dobbs helped them. Not only on the field but with the expectations that surround being the QB at the University of Tennessee. There is no substitution for live game reps.”

Jones on his six draft choices and 9-win season:
“It helps our current football team when our current team sees NFL coaches at practice. They understand what those six players were about… We had a number of years we didn’t have any players drafted.”

On promoting Scott to OC:
“I’ve been excited about all our new coaches. The energy starts with us coaches. In terms of the promotion, that was an easy choice. I was able to evaluate him for a year, his input on game week, his relationship with the players. He understands our players, there is no learning curve there.”

On potential new redshirt rule:
“I would be in favor of that. It’s all about development for these young men and every player is different.”
