Any chance of a possible hangover following the monumental upset at Florida last week ended on the first drive of the game.

The Wildcats scored in less than four minutes as QB Terry Wilson, a.k.a. “Touchdown Terry,” capped a 91-yard drive with a 42-yard touchdown as tight coverage in the Murray State secondary left a gaping hole in the middle of the field. It was the second straight game Kentucky started the game with a 91-yard scoring drive.

Despite some sloppy play by the backup offensive line, and a soft defense at the end of the first half, Kentucky rolled past an overmatched Murray State 48-10. A horse-collar penalty against Murray State on a sack on Wilson revived a Kentucky drive late in the third quarter, as the Wildcats later scored on an A.J. Rose 3-yard TD.

Wilson, who overcame a cut on his right hand that required a bandage, was 12-for-14 passing for 82 yards in the first half with 10 carries for 56 yards and a TD. He added to both sets of numbers in the third quarters before turning it over to Gunnar Hoak, who threw a touchdown pass. Hoak went 4-for-5 for 77 yards.

The Wildcats were liberal with substitutions early, and had most of their backup offensive line in early in the second quarter. But it was that second-string line that yielded the first sack the unit’s given up this season. It wasn’t the cleanest first half Kentucky’s contributed in recent memory. On one Murray drive midway through the second quarter, the Racers had two drops and the Wildcats were flagged twice for pass interference.

On the last drive of the first half, Murray connected on two plays that combined for 56 yards, which setup a first and goal from the Kentucky 6-yard-line. But a false start penalty led to a field goal for a 17-3 Kentucky lead at halftime. For perspective, Murray State had 72 total yards entering the final drive of the first half, and they reeled off 64 yards on eight plays. Kentucky didn’t force a three-and-out for the Murray offense until the second half, but then made three in a row.

Kentucky RB Benny Snell inched closer to tying Randall Cobb’s career record (37) with a score late in the first half. He’s now two away. Snell scored after a methodical 14-play, 64-yard drive for the Wildcats. Two years ago, Snell broke Cobb’s freshman record with 13 touchdowns. After he lined up at quarterback in the Wildcat formation, Snell with just five seconds left in the third quarter, made the lead block on a Zy’Aire Hughes 43-yard touchdown that was ruled a pass from Snell.

Some depth chart changes included Tymere Dubose starting in place of Quinton Bohanna at nose guard. Bohanna left the Florida game early because of a nagging ankle problem. He was not available on Saturday. E.J. Price started at left tackle for the second straight game for UK, but a holding penalty against him killed the second drive. Price was also called for a hold in the third quarter.

Kentucky K Miles Butler connected on a 40-yard field goal early in the second quarter, his first of the season.

Kentucky’s undefeated start will get a stiff test next week when the Wildcats play host to Mississippi State at 7 p.m. ET.
