Urban Meyer has served his three-game suspension and will return to the Ohio State sidelines this Saturday against Tulane. But not before, once again, doing damage control in an exclusive interview with ESPN.

The Worldwide Leader in Sports released the second part of its interview with Meyer on Monday, where he told ESPN’s Tom Rinaldi that if he “had known there was domestic violence” he “would have fired” former coach Zach Smith.

“There were so many red flags now that I look back and even after the fact. The things I did know that came out, I should have acted differently,” Meyer said. “But right at the time, deep in my heart, I thought I was doing the right thing.”

Meyer called his suspension, which ended Saturday, “fair,” but the coach doubled-down, saying he didn’t lie at Big Ten media days when he shared his knowledge of a 2015 allegation against Smith.

Meyer also faced criticism for not apologizing to Smith’s wife, Courtney, during a news conference on Aug. 22 when his suspension was announced. He took the time to apologize in this interview.

It will be interesting to see how the public reacts to this, along with the statement Meyer released, as he and Ohio State try to move past the scandal and earn another trip to the College Football Playoffs.
