Following the departure of Charles Kelly to Alabama, Jeremy Pruitt suddenly did not have much experience on his staff when it came to coaching the defensive backs in his defensive system. He changed that pretty quickly on Friday afternoon.

If you missed the news, cornerbacks coach and former VFL Terry Fair was relieved of his duties in Knoxville. While that may have come as a surprise to many, how quickly Tennessee named Fair’s replacement was even more interesting.

According to 247Sports, Tennessee has already hired Raiders secondary coach Derrick Ansley to fill the position in Knoxville. Looking to bring someone to Rocky Top with extensive knowledge of his defensive and at the same time an excellent recruiter, too, Pruitt could not have done much better than hiring Ansley from Oakland.

In addition to being the defensive backs coach, Ansley will also earn the title of co-defensive coordinator with Tennessee.

Pruitt and Ansley previously worked together on Alabama’s coaching staff, coaching defensive backs in Tuscaloosa under Nick Saban. In addition to his outstanding coaching track record, which was good enough to get him on an NFL staff, Ansley is credited with landing 10 four-star prospects as a recruiter, according to 247Sports.

Hard to imagine Pruitt doing much better than Ansley when it came to this role on his staff.
