This week at Big Ten Media Days, Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh became the first prominent head coach to advocate for players to transfer one time without having to sit out a year.

Harbaugh’s media day comments were met with criticism from a former Wolverines player who transferred and was recently denied a waiver. The player’s mother also spoke out for the first time, too, after Harbaugh made a comment about depression and mental health within the same context. The transfer in question, James Hudson, left Michigan and cited mental health issues.

Below are Harbaugh’s comments on the subject at B1G Media Days:

“Once that’s known it’s ‘Say this,’” Harbaugh said in a radio interview. “And then, to get eligible — the problem I see in that is you’re going to have guys who are ‘OK, yeah, I’m depressed.’”

Harbaugh’s comments appear to be misconstrued. He clearly wants the NCAA to adopt the one-time transfer rule, and by not doing it, the players would cite mental illness — or something else — to be able to gain immediate eligibility with a waiver.

In response to the criticism, the Michigan head coach released a statement Saturday morning to clear the air.
