Former Alabama specialist beats out 9-year veteran for NFL roster spot
Former Alabama long-snapper Cole Mazza has secured an NFL roster spot after outperforming a nine-year veteran in training camp.
The Los Angeles Chargers made the decision to go with Mazza official by releasing Mike Windt on Tuesday.
“It was not so much what Mike did. Cole did an outstanding job,” Chargers coach Anthony Lynn said during his Tuesday press conference. “He’s been here from Day 1 in the offseason program, and he snapped in some big games in college. I wanted to see him snap some in the NFL, and he’s just done an outstanding job.”
Mazza, who played at Alabama from 2013-16, was in the AAF earlier this season, playing for the Birmingham Iron.
