One of the top early recruits for Will Muschamp has chosen to transfer, but the coach said the team will handle it like it does other absences. Jamyest Williams has entered his name into the transfer portal just four games into his third season with the Gamecocks.

Williams has been a consistent performer in the secondary, though he has dealt with injuries and had shoulder surgery, but returned and played in every game this season. His versatility was among his most valuable traits as he could play cornerback, safety or nickel. He previously appeared in 19 games and made 10 starts before this season. He started the first three games of this season, but did not start at Missouri, however, he played as a backup and on special teams.

“We just continue the roll the guys that have been playing,” Muschamp said at his weekly press conference, and added that it’s no different than in other cases where players were out. “We’ll be fine.”

Asked if it was a surprise to him, Muschamp replied, “He just wanted another opportunity, another situation. We support him 100 percent. I loved coaching Jam, and we’re moving forward.”

Williams has 16 tackles, which is fifth on the team. He will have one year of eligibility remaining.

Williams is a Loganville, Georgia native and coming out of high school was considered the ninth-best player in the state, the 12th-best cornerback in the country and No. 87 overall player by 247Sports.

South Carolina plays host to Kentucky on Saturday night.
