UPDATE: LSU is refuting the claim that Williamson has been selected as the GameDay celebrity picker.

It would seem that, with all of the famous people that have either graduated from LSU or are connected to the university, ESPN’s College GameDay would have no problem finding someone with purple and gold in their blood to serve as the guest picker on the popular Saturday morning show.

Well, ESPN went a different route as the producers have chosen Zion Williamson, the No. 1 pick in this year’s NBA draft out of Duke University, to be the guest on stage when the show is live in Baton Rouge this weekend ahead of the Tigers’ matchup against Florida.

It makes some sense — Williamson was picked by the New Orleans Pelicans — so his popularity locally has risen since the draft. Yet it is hard to figure out why someone like Shaquille O’Neal or Ben Simmons (both No. 1 picks in the NBA) would not be asked in place of Williamson. Heck, fly down Odell Beckham Jr. for the day and have him give his opinions on the state of college football.

Anyway, fans of the game will soon find out how much Williamson, a native of South Carolina, pays attention to college football. Personally, if this doesn’t result in an arm-wrestling contest between Williamson and LSU coach Ed Orgeron, it will be a disappointment.
