Late in the first half of Saturday’s win over South Carolina, Tennessee coach Jeremy Pruitt was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The penalty was issued after a targeting penalty against the Vols was confirmed. Pruitt got his money’s worth arguing with the refs.

In his postgame press conference, Pruitt said he needs to keep his mouth shut to not hurt his defense (via 247Sports):

“I didn’t help the guys. I got a penalty and I can’t do that,” he said. “Gave them four extra yards there. We probably would’ve held them if I kept my mouth shut. But I’m going to take up for my players, I can guarantee you that.”

Overall, it didn’t matter, as the Vols dominated the second half en route to a 41-21 victory. Now Tennessee is very much alive in the bowl race.
