There’s a real chance Kentucky could go from not having a quarterback on the field to having two great options next fall.

Having that situation become a reality isn’t a certainty, however, as Terry Wilson continues to rehab his way back from a season-ending injury and Joey Gatewood is currently not eligible to compete for the Wildcats in 2020 due to current NCAA transfer rules.

Wilson is hard at work to regain his form while Gatewood, along with several other players around the SEC and the nation, is hoping to gain immediate eligibility as the NCAA is considering passing a one-time waiver exemption to all undergraduate athletes in football and basketball.

Gatewood has also filed a waiver to play immediately in 2020, however, he won’t need that if the NCAA passes the one-time waiver exemption.

Until we know how that waiver rule comes into place, Kentucky is waiting to hear back on Gatewood’s waiver request.

During a recent appearance on the “Saturday Down South Podcast,” Stoops was asked to share the latest on Gatewood’s waiver request.

“I’m not sure. I really can’t give you an update on that because I’m just holding on like the rest of us,” Stoops said. “I think it’d be very unfair for Joey not to be able to play this year, but we’ll see. We’re waiting to hear back on that. I think there’s quite a few issues going on in the NCAA, but that’s not a good reason to put a guy like Joey Gatewood on hold. His future, his career is very important and we do think he should be eligible to play this year but we’ll see.”

When it comes to Wilson’s status, Stoops also shared insight into the quarterback’s attempts to return to the field.

“Terry’s doing a really good job. He’s still got some work to do,” Stoops continued. “We’re rebuilding that quad and getting his quad back up to full strength. That’s the one issue with his injury is just making sure he returns to play that he has full strength in his quad, but he is throwing and moving around pretty good and progressing quite well, and we expect him to have a full recovery.”
