Less than a week before its season opener, Mississippi State has learned it will have less offensive-line depth than it originally thought.

According to Paul Jones of 247Sports, Bulldogs redshirt senior offensive tackle Scott Lashley will miss all of 2020 due to injury. Lashley was listed as the backup right tackle to sophomore Kwatrivous Johnson on the depth chart for Mississippi State’s season opener at LSU.

This was going to be Lashley’s first season with the Bulldogs after he transferred from Alabama earlier this year. Over the past three seasons, the 6-foot-7, 315-pounder appeared in 19 games for the Crimson Tide, including eight each of the past two seasons.

Lashley is scheduled to undergo surgery on Tuesday, according to Jones, after he was injured in training camp and missed three weeks of practice.

Although Lashley wasn’t going to start Saturday, he would have provided Mississippi State with strong depth on the offensive line. The Bulldogs have a pair of experienced starting guards in seniors Greg Eiland and Dareuan Parker, but they’re also starting a pair of sophomores (Cole Smith and Johnson) and redshirt freshman left tackle Charles Cross.

However, as Jones pointed out, Lashley will be able to return to Mississippi State in 2021 if he wants to because of the NCAA’s announcement that the 2020 season won’t count against eligibility.

Mississippi State is set to open the season at LSU on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS.
