LSU suffered a historic upset loss Saturday against Mississippi State 44-34.

Mike Leach’s SEC debut was spectacular, and MSU quarterback KJ Costello broke an SEC record with 632 yards passing, as the Bulldogs rolled up 44 points and 632 yards of total offense.

LSU, of course, lost a ridiculous amount of talent with Joe Burrow and Clyde Edwards-Helaire, among others, to the NFL. Star wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase also opted out before the season, and LSU’s roster looks much different in 2020.

It’s always tough returning to defend a national championship without a Heisman Trophy winner like Burrow. We’ve seen that in the past from Auburn (Cam Newton) and Florida (Tim Tebow).  Both programs took steps back. Program-changing-type players are always incredibly hard to replace, and we saw that a bit Saturday with LSU.

Quarterback Myles Brennan threw for 345 yards, 3 touchdowns and 2 INTs. Of course, Bo Pelini’s defense was absolutely gashed by Leach’s offense, too.

Following the game, former Alabama defensive back Marlon Humphrey, who now plays for the Ravens, took a shot at LSU while complementing Alabama. Remember, LSU beat Alabama last year after losing 8 straight.

Alabama and LSU will play on November 14.
