Florida wide receiver Trevon Grimes saw his season get off to a strong start on Saturday. He was a key part of the Gators’ 51-35 win over Ole Miss, catching 3 passes for 64 yards and a touchdown.

After 33 catches, 491 yards and 3 touchdowns last year, the hope is that the senior can take his place as one of the primary weapons on offense for quarterback Kyle Trask after the departure of players such as Freddie Swain and Van Jefferson. However, with the COVID-19 pandemic casting a shadow over the college football season, he did not participate in the Gators’ initial fall practice sessions.

“I felt like it was my duty that we were in the best situation. As a leader of the group, I wanted to make sure the protocols were set up,” he said on Tuesday, according to SI.com’s Florida site. “I didn’t want to go into a situation where the unknown was unknown.”

With Grimes’ absence, there was some speculation that he would sit out the 2020 season altogether. But on August 20, he announced on Twitter that he would indeed play this year.
