It’s official: Another quarterback is leaving Mississippi State.

After an earlier report that redshirt sophomore Jalen Mayden was planning to enter the transfer portal, he confirmed on Twitter that he’ll be doing just that and leaving the Bulldogs. He tweeted a statement sending thanks “for the opportunities and support” he got while at Mississippi State.

Mayden added that it was “truly an honor” to play for the Bulldogs:

Mayden joins Garrett Shrader (who had been moved to wide receiver) as Mississippi State quarterbacks to enter the transfer portal this season, which is the Bulldogs’ first under head coach Mike Leach. With Leach at the helm, graduate transfer K.J. Costello has been the starting quarterback while true freshman Will Rogers has also gotten some playing time.

Over his three years at Mississippi State, Mayden went 1-for-2 for 9 yards and had seven rushes for 32 yards, all of which came during three games in 2018. He was a 4-star recruit (per the 247Sports Composite rankings) out of Sachse (Texas) High School and was a member of the Bulldogs’ 2018 recruiting class.

Now, Mayden will look for a new opportunity where he can potentially get more playing time.

With Costello and Rogers as the quarterbacks, Mississippi State is set to face Alabama this Saturday at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.
