College football fans everywhere are wondering what the next round of realignment will look like if Texas and Oklahoma leave the Big 12 to join the SEC.

The Big 12 is currently considered a Power 5 conference. If Texas and Oklahoma leave, the Big 12 would be down to just eight teams, lacking a perennial powerhouse program. While some fans might expect the Big 12 to look to add teams from Group of 5 conferences, one of those conferences is reportedly looking to do the poaching.

Per CBS Sports’ Chip Patterson, a report in The Athletic citing high-ranking sources within the AAC says the conference “plans to act as an aggressor” and “will try to poach the Big 12’s leftovers, potentially as a group.”

The AAC currently has 11 teams over a large footprint that stretches from Florida (UCF, USF) to Pennsylvania (Temple) to Texas (SMU, Houston). Cincinnati was the conference’s champion in the 2020 season.

ESPN had previously reported that the Big 12 has considered adding AAC teams UCF, Houston and Cincinnati.

It’s unclear how many “leftovers” might be available for the AAC or any other conference looking to take on Big 12 teams in search of a new home. Kansas has reportedly reached out to the Big Ten.
