Kentucky is basking in the success of a pair of athletes who competed in the Tokyo Olympics. The Wildcats brought home a pair of gold medals in air rifle and fencing.

Will Shaner cemented his place as the best male air rifle shooter in the world Sunday, winning gold in the men’s air rifle competition on day two of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics inside the Asaka Shooting Range.

Meanwhile, Lee Kiefer won the third gold medal for the United States at the Tokyo Olympics and the third fencing gold in the country’s history by beating defending champion Inna Deriglazova of Russia 15-13 in the women’s foil final. A four-time NCAA champion at Notre Dame, Kiefer is now a medical student at Kentucky, the Associated Press reported.

The gold medal is historic for Shaner and the United States as it’s the first ever for the Americans in men’s air rifle and came after the three-time UK All-American set an Olympic record score in the final.

“Still trying to believe it. It has been a long time, though, growing up in the sport, progressing. To finally have (the gold medal), it’s amazing,” Shaner told USA Today afterwards. “I just did the same thing as I did there and just worked out the problems I had and just knew that it was going to get me to where I wanted to be.”

Kiefer shared a similar feeling.

“It’s such an incredible feeling that I share with my coach, I share with my husband, with my family, just everyone that’s been a part of this,” she said, her gold medal hanging from her neck. “I wish I could chop it up in little pieces and distributed it to everyone I love.”
