Alabama has been ranked No. 1 in the AP Top 25 poll all season. Georgia has been impressive, too, which is why it’s climbed to the No. 2 spot, but it hasn’t overtaken the Crimson Tide.

That doesn’t mean the Bulldogs don’t have areas in which they’re better than the Tide. ESPN’s Rece Davis believes Georgia has a clear advantage over Alabama on one side of the ball.

“Georgia, in my judgement, as we sit here right now, is significantly better than Alabama on defense,” Davis recently said on The ESPN College Football Podcast. “Alabama’s defense is not as porous as I think you suspected, but they’re not Georgia, at least in my judgement.”

However, Davis still has Alabama ranked ahead of Georgia. The reason? The Crimson Tide’s advantage at quarterback thanks to sophomore Bryce Young.

“Whether it’s JT Daniels or Stetson Bennett or Carson Beck or whoever it is, Alabama is significantly better at quarterback than Georgia,” Davis said. “And because that is the most important position on the field, and that is the player who touches the ball every play, that’s why I have Alabama ranked No. 1 and Georgia No. 2.

“What I would like to do on my AP ballot is put Alabama and Georgia side by side, leave about 6 spots blank and then rank the rest of them.”

Alabama and Georgia are both currently 5-0. And as long as both teams keep rolling, it’s likely the Crimson Tide and Bulldogs will meet in the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta this December.
