The 32-year-old quarterback spent his first 9 seasons in the NFL with the Panthers. He was named the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2011, and then the AP Offensive Player of the Year and league MVP in 2015. A 3-time Pro Bowler and former All-Pro selection, Newton led the Panthers to Super Bowl 50 in 2015.

He’s the NFL’s all-time leader in rushing touchdowns by a quarterback and the Panthers’ all-time leader in passing yards (29,041), touchdowns (182), and rushing scores (58).

Carolina (4-5) faces the 8-1 Arizona Cardinals on Sunday in Glendale, Arizona, and was looking at the prospect of facing off against one of the stiffer defenses in the NFL with either PJ Walker or Matt Barkley as its starter at quarterback. Starting quarterback Sam Darnold is out 4-to-6 weeks with a shoulder injury.

Newton, the former Heisman Trophy winner at Auburn, hasn’t played this season; he was released by the New England Patriots prior to the team’s opening game. He started 15 games for the Patriots last season (7-8) and threw for 2,657 yards and 8 touchdowns against 10 interceptions. Newton completed 65.8% of his passes, the second-best completion rate of his career.
