DeQuandre Smith continued the recruiting momentum for South Carolina this week when the 3-star ATH out of Columbia, South Carolina (Spring Valley) pledged to the Gamecocks. He’s the fifth recruit to commit to the Gamecocks in the last week.

Smith is 6-foot-1 1/2 and 208 pounds, and is the No. 23-rated player in the Palmetto State, according to the 247Sports Composite. Smith played quarterback in high school, but was recruited to the Gamecocks by defensive backs coach Torrian Gray.

Smith told recruiting insider Phil Kornblut in May that playing quarterback is important to him.

“Yes sir, it kind of does matter to me,” Smith said. “Quarterback. I work really hard at it, so that’s what I want to be.”

Smith said he has discussed his desire to be a quarterback with Gamecock head coach Shane Beamer and Gray.

“They said they were going to talk it out more and probably give me some packages for quarterback as well,” Smith said.

Would that satisfy him? “Not all the way. I wouldn’t say it was a (deal) killer, but it’s definitely a lower chance (for USC).”

Michigan, Georgia Southern, Florida Atlantic and Charlotte were among the other schools to offer him.
