Brian Kelly isn’t happy with the delays that instant replay cause. Some of his “anger” might be a little tongue-in-cheek, but there are also some complaints that might be valid.

The LSU head coach took time to sound off on replay while doing his weekly radio show.

“Ten out of 10 times, the call stands on the field. Unless it’s an LSU call, right?” Kelly said. “Or is it just me? I just don’t think they like the guy from up north.”

The story went on to point out a call Kelly had a gripe with during last Saturday’s 45-35 win against Florida. On the play Harold Perkins looked like his sacked Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson and caused a fumble, but replay determined that Richardson’s arm was moving forward and declared it an incomplete pass.

“Here’s how it was explained to us: If you break it down to the millisecond by a frame, his hand is slightly moving forward by a frame,” Kelly said. “So, if we’re going to get to that level, it’s amazing. Like, instant replay is ruining the game.”

It’s hard to use an example where instant replay worked and the correct call was made to determine that instant replay is ruining the game. The officials on the field do the best job they can, but the game gets faster every year and calls are missed. If the roles were reversed on that play last week and replay didn’t exist, Kelly would likely complain about a missed call.

His final gripe is with the delays slowing the game down. There’s something to be said for that. College football games are LONG. A lot of that has to do with the clock stopping to move the chains after every first down. If a game has 50 first downs, that’s probably 15-20 minutes of additional time added on to all the other breaks.

Attempts to speed up the college football game have been tried and they didn’t work. The game is just long and most fans seemed to be ok with it. Baseball games are long too, but most of that time is wasted standing around, calling time in the batter’s box, shaking off pitches, etc.

There’s probably a happy medium here and it’s on Kelly and other coaches with his stature to figure that out because instant replay isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
