Kalen DeBoer is very excited about incoming transfer quarterback Austin Mack.

Mack entered the portal earlier this offseason and ended up committing to Alabama. He spent his true freshman campaign at Washington under DeBoer and evidently made big strides toward being able to play for the Huskies.

DeBoer, while speaking with reporters at the Senior Bowl on Wednesday, said Mack learned Washington’s offense very quickly.

“He’s young. For him to do what he did last year with us [after reclassifying], he learned the offense as fast as anyone I’ve ever seen at that age,” DeBoer said.

Mack was an elite prospect coming out of high school. A 4-star talent, he was the No. 216 overall player and the No. 16 quarterback in the country for the class of 2023, per 247Sports Composite rankings. He was also the No. 16 player from California.

Mack did not attempt a pass for the Huskies this past season, as Washington’s had a well-established quarterback room led by Michael Penix Jr. But Mack could compete for a top backup role behind incumbent starter Jalen Milroe in Tuscaloosa this offseason. Mack will have the advantage of already having a year in the system that Alabama will run under DeBoer and offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb.

Mack still has 4 years of eligibility remaining.
