Third time’s a charm?

That just might be the case for Cam Newton, considering the Panthers are injury-riddled and need a QB. During the final exhibition game, backup QB Sam Darnold suffered a high ankle-sprain that could potentially keep him out 4-6 weeks. Third string QB Matt Corral is currently tending season-ending Lisfranc injury to his left foot. That leaves the Panthers with only two healthy arms in starter Baker Mayfield, and fourth-string QB PJ Walker. Before the current rash of injuries, the Panthers likely planned to cut Walker. However, he may be one of the few options left for the Carolina.

Is another reunion between the Panthers and Cam Newton inevitable? Head coach Matt Rhule didn’t rule out the possibility after the game, per the Charlotte Observer:

“Scott (Fitterer, the Panthers’ GM) and I would have to talk about that, and obviously Cam would have to weigh in on that,” Rhule said. “There’d be a lot of things we’d have to look at. You guys know my feeling on Cam. My time with him was fantastic, but it’s probably too early to say anything about that.”

It seems as though the Panthers are open to the possibility, but what about Newton? He addressed a hypothetical return at the end of the 2022 season:

“If an opportunity presents itself where I don’t necessarily need to play, and it’s about winning, yeah, I’m willing to do that, too. Because from this point forward, I’m not coming back for no 5-12. I can tell you that now”

Will Newton suit up once again for Carolina? Only time will tell.
