Johni Broome left the court in serious pain on Saturday while No. 2 Auburn was locked in a tight second-half battle with South Carolina.
Following a bucket from South Carolina’s Collin Murray-Boyles with a little under 14 minutes to play, the Auburn big man appeared to injure his left foot/ankle and immediately hit the deck. He grabbed at his ankle and had to be helped off the floor by Auburn trainers. Broome was unable to put any weight on his left foot and was taken directly to the Tigers’ locker room.
He was later ruled out for the rest of the game.
Broome had 6 points and 3 rebounds for the Tigers at the time of his exit.
The All-American averaged 18.7 points and 11.2 rebounds per game through his first 15 appearances for Auburn this season. A 2-time All-SEC selection and an SEC All-Defense honoree, Broome has been instrumental in Auburn’s 14-1 start.
The Tigers have looked like the best team in the country at times this year and Broome has played like the National Player of the Year. Entering Saturday’s slate of games, Broome led all qualified Division I players in PER (37.3), win shares per 40 minutes, and box plus/minus. He’s also fifth in the country in rebounding.
If he’s forced to miss any time, it’s a massive blow to Auburn just 3 games into the start of SEC play.
