My sophomore year 1983. Watched some dude hurl an empty 1.5 L bottle of vodka off the deck into the Kentucky visitor section. Alcohol was banned coming into the stadium next week with pat downs at every gate from then on. Fast forward 20 years - 2003. Took my non-drinking parents to see Bama visit the Dawgs. My Dad was born & raised Bama. I could not convince my wife nor mother to sneak in booze for me. I ended up getting pints and using Ace bandages to strap them to my chest and back. Mom & wife got checked…purse, pockets, shoes, everything. Dad & I slid thru unfettered.
It’s interesting that all the ones that are going into the portal are either not picked up yet or signing on with not-so-elite programs. Hmmmmm…..
Seems like Georgia players have been opting out all year, lol. Lots of injuries, next man up, still winning until Bama.
Assuming the standings: Georgia Michigan Washington Florida State Ohio State Oregon Texas Alabama Top 4 are undefeated. Bottom 4 are 1-loss. Below that are 2-loss teams and no 2-loss team has ever made CFP. Georgia vs. Bama Michigan vs. Iowa Washington vs. Oregon Florida State vs. Louisville Ohio State idle Texas vs. Oklahoma State I see Michigan, Oregon, Florida State, and Texas winning, leaving Michigan and Florida State as the only undefeated teams. If Bama wins, here is the list of 1-loss teams vying for spots 3 & 4. Georgia Oregon Bama Washington Ohio State Texas You can’t put Georgia in and not Bama. You can’t put Washington in and not Oregon. You can’t put Bama in and not Texas. What a mess. Dawgs must win out starting next weekend to secure a 3-peat. That’s it.
Everybody likes that “if” word. “If” Harrison hadn’t been injured, OSU would have won the game. Here is a big “if” for you… “If” Marvin Harrison signed with and became a Georgia Bulldawg, he wouldn’t have been knocked out of the game and would be wearing a ring right now.
I remember in 1988, after buying my first home just outside Newnan, hearing the news that Vince retired from coaching. My freshman year was 1982…undefeated up until the Sugar Bowl. We sat down on our couch that day in ‘88 and just couldn’t comprehend Georgia without our coach.
When you are the #1 team in the nation, it would literally make a team’s year to upset you. In the SEC, a team like Mizzou will give everything they have to beat #1. The crowd shows up and is hyped up, trick plays come out, and everything is on the table. You cannot just bring your A game…you must be mistake free and totally disciplined. We were not, and it almost caught us. CKS said all that in a much briefer description, “It’s tough to win on the road in the SEC.” It’s not propaganda…it’s fact.
What if we didn’t have a walk-on, back-up quarterback all year? What if JT played during the SEC Championship? What if George Pickens didn’t tear his ACL? What if Burton didn’t get hurt? What if Bo Nix played in the Iron Bowl? What if the refs didn’t blow those 3-4 calls in the ‘18 Nattie?
Problem remains, from that distance, the trajectory makes it much easier to block. Blocking a kick from 73 yards out creates quite the risk.
It’s interesting to read about our offense - “what is Bennett going to do when they face a real defense?” Bennett faces the #1 defense in the country every single day, without many of the star-studded playmakers dressed out. I think we’ll be okay.
Poor grammar, too. It should read, “If I wanted to play with kids, I’d have my own”, or, “If I want to play with kids, I’ll have my own”.
Perhaps, but I would wager that if OSU was in the SEC, and they played Auburn & Georgia back-to-back in weeks 8 & 9, they would be slowed down quite a lot. I just don’t see Florida Atlantic, Cincinnati, Indiana, Miami (OH), Nebraska, Michigan State, Northwestern, Maryland, and Rutgers depleting OSU’s resources. I don’t want to downplay Field’s ability, but if he lined up against Bama, LSU, Georgia, Auburn, Florida, Texas A&M, Missouri, South Carolina every week instead of the aforementioned teams, perhaps this would not be a topic of conversation.
There is a third item overlooked...would Fields have the same success playing against 8 SEC defenses week-to-week? 9, if you include the SEC championship. Sure, you can say, “We’ll see if Ohio State gets matched up against LSU”, but that’s not the same. Playing 8-9 SEC defenses bangs up a lot of offensive players, either knocking them out for the season or making them soft from repeated pounding.
