Ronald Powell has tragically passed away at the age of 32, according to a former teammate.

Junior Galette, a teammate of Powell’s with the New Orleans Saints, shared the sad news on social media.

Powell, 32, played at Florida from 2010-to-2013, the final season of Urban Meyer’s tenure and Will Muschamp’s first three seasons. He was in the NFL from 2014-16 and then played in the Alliance of American Football.

Powell, out of Rancho Verde High School in California, was the No. 1 overall recruit in 2010, headlining a star-studded Florida recruiting class. The final class signed by Urban Meyer at Florida, UF’s 2010 group was the highest-rated class by 247Sports Composite score until Alabama signed its 2021 class.

As a Gator, Powell played in 36 games, making 21 starts, over 4 years. He missed the 2012 campaign after tearing his ACL in the spring and injuring his knee again that fall.

Powell’s Florida career highlights include Freshman All-SEC Team recognition in 2010 when he played in all 13 games, making 1 start. Powell was Florida’s leader in sacks in 2011 and 2013. He finished with 84 total tackles, including 19 TFLs and 11 sacks.

Opting to forego his remaining college eligibility, Powell was selected by the New Orleans Saints in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draft with pick No. 169. He played 14 games for the Saints in 2014, but was waived ahead of the 2015 season before rejoining the club and spending time on injured reserve.

Powell spent time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Chicago Bears and Seattle Seahawks over 2015 and ’16. His last professional stop came with the Alliance of American Football’s Orlando Apollos, where he signed in 2018 for the 2019 season. The AAF ceased operations in April 2019.

Powell would have turned 33 on May 14.
