Boo Corrigan and the College Football Playoff committee didn’t have anything in the way of an opposing argument when it came to keeping Georgia No. 1 in its rankings on Tuesday. The Bulldogs certainly did their part, beating Tennessee 38-10 at Neyland Stadium despite the Volunteers taking a 7-0 lead on the opening play from scrimmage.

“Tennessee scores on their first offensive play, whatever it is, 105, 110,000 people going crazy, and to see Georgia score on six of their first eight possessions was incredibly impressive. It was incredibly impressive,” the committee chairman said on Tuesday’s teleconference.

The Vols were No. 18 going into Saturday’s game and ended up dropping 3 spots. Corrigan was asked how road wins over ranked opponents help enhance the resume of Top 25 teams or, in this case, how much of a gap there is between No. 1 and No. 2 at this point. The 4 teams below Georgia — Ohio State, Michigan, Washington, and Florida State — have identical 11-0 records.

“I think it’s a pretty unique time for us,” he said. “I think there’s a lot of really good football teams in the country right now, and [Georgia is] certainly one of them but not only one of them, they’re the team that we believe is the best team in the country right now.”
