Darnell Washington joined Kirby Smart’s Georgia program in the 2020 recruiting class. The 5-star prospect would go on to play a key role in back-to-back national titles for the Bulldogs before leaving for the NFL.

Though Washington’s recruitment is now a thing of the past, his name surfaced Friday in a report related to his time as a prospect. According to that report by Mike Wilson with The Knoxville News Sentinel, ex-Tennessee assistant Brian Niedermeyer violated NCAA rules while recruiting Washington to the Vols.

Those violations reportedly included a cash delivery in a parking lot and Niedermeyer accompanying Washington’s family on a flight for the player’s official visit to Knoxville. Here’s what Wilson’s report had to say about deciphering Washington’s identity from the investigation:

Knox News uncovered his identity through NCAA investigative documents that referred to him as “prospective student-athlete 9” and “prospect 4,” online sites that track college visits of prospective recruits, and a source with direct knowledge of the situation. The source spoke to Knox News about the recruitment on condition of anonymity.

Despite Tennessee’s attempts, Washington eventually signed with Georgia. He caught 28 passes for 454 yards and 2 touchdowns this past season before being selected in the 3rd round of this year’s NFL Draft.
