Georgia baseball coach responds to cheating allegations

Georgia baseball coach Wes Johnson addressed cheating allegations while speaking with reporters on Thursday.

The Bulldogs came under suspicion after video surfaced of Georgia relief pitcher Christian Mracna appearing to apply a foreign substance to his glove before entering the game against Texas A&M on Sunday.

After entering the game in the 8th inning on Sunday, Mracna got the final 6 outs of the game to secure a 5-4 series-finale win for the Bulldogs. All 6 hitters were retired via strikeout.

On Thursday, Johnson told reporters that he instructs his players to abide by the rules.

“I’m going to make a blanket statement,” Johnson said. “I don’t have time in my day to deal with online, subjective distractions. We teach our players to play by the rules. That’s just where I’m at.”

For reference, here’s the video in-question that features Mracna seemingly applying a foreign substance to his glove before entering the game:

Texas A&M coach Jim Schlossnagle addressed the issue in a statement to the Associated Press earlier this week.

“Certainly appears that way,” Schlossnagle told The Associated Press when asked about Mracna. “It’s part of the game … wish we would’ve caught it.”

Georgia is 30-12 this season, but remains under .500 in SEC play with a 10-11 record. The Bulldogs are currently projected to be a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament, according to the latest predictions from D1Baseball and Baseball America.

  • Sure looks awful fishy. Who hides in a corner if he’s doing nothing illegal to his glove?

  • Total bunch of cheaters…. Won’t catch them doing that again any time soon!

  • Pretty weak answer from Wes. Are we to believe he heard the allegations and didn’t address them? Not credible.

    • Officially there are no allegations are there?

      • It doesn’t have to be official. Obviously, he’s heard them.

        • Not gonna deny it, optics on this look pretty sketchy. As a follow up question I’d like to ask who that was filming the bullpen? Did aTm hire Connor Stalions or what???

        • That’s an interesting question. I have no idea.

        • The Jomboy breakdown on yt is called “Fans catch blah blah” and he said “students” filmed it during narration, but then were they unable to alert the team? Or maybe Georgia fans would not say something but then release their video. It obviously came to light so yeah I have questions. I came googlin for a newsier article after seeing the cheating.

  • Man, what a tear he went on, striking out a couple of the best hitters in the country with that mean 2-strike fastball. Incredible amount of spin he got on it – they were all swinging right below where the ball was. Incredible spin. Wow, how’d he do it?

  • Hey ya’ll. I came for a news article after seeing the Jomboy video breakdown on yt. It’s super clear that three times in his short relief session, when a new ball comes out, he touches his index and middle fingertips the spot on his glove where he applied the substance. It’s unbelievably obvious.

  • Georgia baseball coach. That pitcher was up to something. Best find out and if need be put a stop to it. As I coach I would deny cheating also. Even if you knew he was cheating. Coaches job is to protect his team. Then internally fix things.
