On Friday, Matt Jones of Kentucky Sports Radio shared the news that former Wildcats QB Jared Lorenzen had been hospitalized due to an infection and that his mother was asking for prayers. This weekend, the family has shared a new update on Lorenzen’s condition.

Jones, via Twitter, shared another update Saturday night (below) with new details. The family reveals that Lorenzen “had not been feeling well for a few weeks” prior to his hospitalization and that in addition to the infection he is dealing with kidney and heart issues. The family describes Lorenzen as “fighting with everything he has.”

The former UK quarterback, who went on to play in the NFL with the New York Giants (2004-08), has been open about his battle with obesity. In 2017, he launched an online series “The Jared Lorenzen Project” to document his weight-loss journey with hopes of inspiring others. When he announced the series, he shared the story of avoiding the scale for so long that his weight had reached 500 pounds. The Indianapolis Colts had listed him at 285 pounds in July 2008 before cutting him from the roster, the end of his NFL career. He later shared that he had dropped 100 pounds less than one year into The Project. The Facebook page for The Project also shared an update on Lorenzen.

SEC football fans everywhere will be joining Big Blue Nation in praying for Lorenzen.
