Paul Finebaum kicked off this week by tackling the vibe around college basketball and Kentucky following the bombshell news of John Calipari.

During his Monday morning appearance on “McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning,” Finebaum was asked about the major SEC basketball storylines at the end of the season. That, of course, centers around Calipari’s move to Arkansas to try and rebuild the Razorbacks.

As for the exit from Lexington, Finebaum sees it as a move that ultimately leaves BBN pretty happy. Calipari has produced some success and 1 national title with the Wildcats, but after 15 years, recent results were not up to par.

“Kentucky fans, quite frankly, are glad to see him go. He had worn out his welcome,” said Finebaum. “I don’t want to hear about his resume, his most recent performance was abysmal by Kentucky standards, and I frankly think he came within a whisker of losing his job 2-3 weeks about but the buyout was too large.”

While replacing Calipari at a program like Kentucky is a tall task, the expectations are similar to what Alabama football faces every fall:

“I think everyone in Lexington feels good today, and I know that sounds crazy… but I think it’s the truth. You just can’t lose twice in 3 years in Kentucky,” Finebaum explained. “We say it every time we have these conversations, but Kentucky basketball is Alabama football, and Alabama fans don’t like losing any important game, and neither does Kentucky.”

Can Calipari adjust at Arkansas?

Sometimes, even iconic head coaches need a fresh start or a new challenge. In fact, for all of Calipari’s recent shortcomings at Kentucky, Finebaum believes a “second marriage” at Arkansas could be just what Calipari needs.

“I think Calipari will be a different coach when he lands at Arkansas today,” claimed Finebaum.

Watching Calipari’s transition will also be interesting because he previously said he did not foresee a change in philosophy. After the loss to Oakland, Calipari admitted it would be “hard for me to change” after focusing on young teams throughout his career.

His main issue at the end of this season was answering the question “How do we get tougher?” in rebounding and defense.

Can Calipari finally adjust to the modern game with an increased focus on the transfer portal to go with elite recruiting? That will play a key to his success at Arkansas, but there’s no denying the excitement he brings to Fayetteville.
