The Oklahoma Sooners are preparing for a massive Week 10 showdown against the No. 25 Florida Gators this Saturday, and the offense is the main topic of discussion in Norman heading into the matchup.

Offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle was fired Monday following another disappointing performance by the Sooners against South Carolina in Week 9, with head coach Brent Venables naming NFL legend Jason Witten as the interim offensive playcaller.

It doesn’t appear as though Venables has any intention of making a change at quarterback, though, with CBS Sports insider Matt Zenitz reporting on Tuesday that Oklahoma plans to stick with senior John Mateer as its starter against the Gators.

Mateer, who is now in his second season with the program after transferring from Washington State, has been inconsistent throughout the year, struggling at times with both turnovers and accuracy in the passing game.

He turned in a relatively solid performance against the Gamecocks last week, throwing for 244 yards and 2 touchdowns without committing a turnover, but he also completed just 26 of his 43 pass attempts on the day.

With the Sooners now essentially eliminated from College Football Playoff contention, it will be interesting to see how much of a leash Venables is willing to give his quarterback over the final few weeks of the season as Oklahoma looks to salvage a bowl game appearance.
