Colin Simmons apologizes for sack celebration that simulated ‘using the restroom’

Texas Longhorns defensive end Colin Simmons had the game of his life against the Tennessee Volunteers. The junior defender tallied five sacks in front of a packed Neyland Stadium to help his team emerge victorious. Unfortunately, that performance won’t be what fans remember from the game.
Early in Texas’s win, Simmons unleashed a sack celebration that referees flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, deeming he was “simulating using the restroom.” Postgame, head coach Steve Sarkisian told reporters Simmons “can’t continue” to do things that hurt the team in such a fashion. Moments later, Simmons apologized for the action.
“I also do wanna say, I apologize for the celebration,” Simmons told reporters. “I was definitely in that mode, feeling myself.”
Simmons confirmed there was a conversation on the sideline about the celebration. Like Sarkisian, he noted the team has a “next play mentality” and didn’t “harp on it.”
Sometimes players can get caught up in the moment and make a mistake that hurts their team. There’s no denying that’s what happened with Simmons, who contributed immensely to Texas improving to 4-0 (1-0 SEC). The Longhorns go on a bye in Week 5 before taking on the Oklahoma Sooners in the Red River Rivalry on Oct. 10.
