Through two games of Jon Sumrall‘s coaching tenure, the Florida Gators are 2-0. They’ve notably lit up the scoreboard in the process.
Florida defeated Florida Atlantic 66-21 in Week 1. On Saturday, the Gators improved to 2-0 with a 52-3 victory over Campbell.
UF now has 2 games of scoring 50 points or more in Sumrall’s tenure. That’s as many as the Gators had in all 4 seasons of the Napier era.
The Gators have score 50 or more points twice in the Jon Sumrall era — the same number of times they did in the entire Billy Napier era.

It’s worth pointing out that the 118 points scored under Sumrall have come against an FCS squad (Campbell) and a Florida Atlantic team ranked No. 115 out of 138 in ESPN’s Football Power Index. Napier’s teams, however, often times failed to light up the scoreboard against Florida’s weaker opponents.
Playing a USF team that would finish 1-11, Florida won the game 31-28 in Week 3 of the 2022 season. In 2023, the Gators came up just short of 50 in a 49-7 win over McNeese. Two weeks later, Napier’s Gators won 22-7 over a Charlotte team that would finish the year 3-9. In 2024, Florida came up short of 50 in a 45-7 win over Samford.
Ironically, Florida tied Napier’s number of 50-plus games on the same day that James Madison scored 87 points. As for Sumrall’s Gators, the opposing defenses are about to get stingier with Florida entering conference play. UF plays at Auburn in Week 3.
