Lane Kiffin on LSU jersey number traditions: ‘A reminder of where you’re at’

Two LSU jersey number traditions are continuing under Lane Kiffin. This week, Kiffin and the coaching staff announced this year’s players who will be wearing the No. 7 and 18 jerseys.
The No. 7 tradition, which dates back to Patrick Peterson in 2008, is meant to recognize the top playmakers on the team. This year, tight end Trey’Dez Green and linebacker Whit Weeks will wear No. 7s.
The No. 18 is meant to be worn by the Tiger who displays excellent leadership and character. Center Braelin Moore will wear a No. 18 patch this year, as jersey-number rules prevent him from wearing No. 18.
Kiffin likes to say that LSU is “just different,” and he told SiriusXM that the traditions remind him of what sets the program apart.
“I had a lot of input from former players, coaches that are here, and, you know, Jack Marucci, who’s downstairs, who’s been here forever and knows all these players. So, it was pretty neat,” Kiffin said. “And then, you know, to have the 7s awarded yesterday and Leonard Fournette be here to do that, Patrick Peterson on Zoom. It’s just a reminder of where you’re at.
“You’re at a place different than anywhere else when it comes to the players that have played here and the swagger and the style that they played with and their passion for playing for LSU. And their passion for having played some a long time ago, still for these kids to win and how important it is for LSU to be great.”
