Brian Kelly is out at LSU despite a 34-14 record since taking over as head coach in 2022. Kelly chased what he deemed a greater opportunity by leaving Notre Dame, which in turn resulted in his assistant Marcus Freeman taking over for the Fighting Irish.
Freeman has went on to guide Notre Dame to at least 9 wins every season and is coming off a trip to the national championship game in 2024. During his Monday press conference, Freeman reacted to the news of Brian Kelly’s firing at LSU.
“Coach Kelly gave me an opportunity to come here and I’m always rooting for him. But it’s also the profession we’ve chosen,” Freeman said. “We’ve chosen this profession and we know that can be a result of choosing this profession.”
The 39-year-old Freeman’s job security seems safe as Notre Dame is currently ranked No. 12 in the AP poll with another solid shot at the College Football Playoff. While at Notre Dame, Kelly reached the BCS national title game in 2012, which is now vacated.
Next up for Freeman and Notre Dame is a road matchup at Boston College on Nov. 1. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET (ESPN).
