SEC bowl projections following Week 12

College football delivered in Week 12.

Tennessee didn’t get beat – it got flat out embarrassed by Shane Beamer and South Carolina in Columbia. The Vols’ 63-38 loss all but slammed the door shut on their CFP aspirations. However, if Tennessee can handle Vanderbilt, and let’s not assume anything at this point, it should still have enough for a New Year’s 6 bid.

Vanderbilt won its second SEC game in a row Saturday, knocking off Florida to keep its bowl hopes alive for another week. Mizzou is in a similar situation with 5 wins but has to face an Arkansas team that torched Ole Miss to clinch bowl eligibility itself.

Back to South Carolina. The Gamecocks now have 7 wins and jumped considerably as far as bowl tiers are concerned. They’ll face off against Clemson for an 8-win season, looking to stay hot after the best win of Beamer’s tenure so far. Florida, meanwhile, has fallen down the totem poll after a horrible loss to the Commodores.

Texas A&M, incredibly, is the only SEC team guaranteed to not crack a bowl this season. Mizzou, Vanderbilt and Auburn all have a chance but all face off against stronger opponents in Rivalry Week. It seems Mizzou has the best chance of the 3 facing off against Arkansas, but none of their cases look great entering Week 13. As we learned in Week 12, anything can happen.

The SEC bowl lineup is similar to that of last season’s. The Las Vegas Bowl will replace the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in its rotation between B1G and SEC. If the ReliaQuest Bowl sounds unfamiliar, it’s because it changed its branding from the Outback Bowl.

As usual, the Sugar Bowl and Orange Bowl have an SEC tie-in because they are not hosting this season’s College Football Playoff. Those distinctions go to the Peach Bowl and the Fiesta Bowl.
