Ole Miss offensive coordinator Phil Longo spoke highly of Rebels new quarterback signee Matt Corral on Wednesday, according to a report from 247Sports’ Ole Miss Spirit site.

The report noted Longo was “lit up like a Christmas tree” when asked to talk about the U.S. Army All-American, who officially signed with the Rebels earlier in the day during the first-ever Early Signing Period.

Corral is a highly-touted, 4-star prospect and is rated as the nation’s No. 3 pro-style quarterback, according to the 247Sports Composite. He’s also listed as one of the country’s top 60 players.

“Big arm, mobile and likes to extend plays,” Longo reportedly said about the Long Beach, Calif. QB. “He’s gritty. He’s got a chip on his shoulder.

“If he were a big dude, he’d be a linebacker,” Longo added.”He’s got that kind of mind set. I just like that he likes to compete, and I like that he has an edge. He’s in attack mode all the time. I like that about him.”

The Rebels flipped Corral from Florida on Dec. 14. He is an early enrollee and will arrive in Oxford on Jan. 20, the report noted.

“You’re just adding another good character guy and another athlete. It obviously makes your room better,” Longo said.

“Anytime you put another bullet in your gun, you’re in good shape.”
