College football leaders are reportedly considering major changes to the new 12-team College Football Playoff format.

Commissioners have recommended to presidents that the expanded College Football Playoff include 5 automatic qualifiers for conference champions and 7 at-large bids, Ross Dellenger reported Friday. The new format would be a change from 6 automatic qualifiers and 6 at-large bids. The change to have less automatic qualifiers comes as the Pac-12 narrows down to just 2 teams — Oregon State and Washington State — in 2024.

Dellenger also reported that CFP leaders are establishing a new policy that would require a conference to have 8 members for its champion to be eligible for an automatic qualifier in the 12-team playoff.

The College Football Playoff expansion from 4 teams to 12 teams will be in place for the 2024 season.

The race for the CFP is heating up ahead of another week of college football. Saturday’s slate of games could have plenty of implications with several top-15 matchups on deck, including Georgia vs. Ole Miss and Michigan vs. Penn State.
