ESPN could elect to not renew its contract for rights to NFL games after the eight-year contract expires for Monday Night Football in 2021. Although ESPN has been known for showing NFL games since 1987, the company’s executives could decide it doesn’t financially make sense anymore.

ESPN agreed to pay $15.2 billion for its current Monday Night Football deal, but the quality of games the network has received in recent years has upset some top executives. Sunday Night Football usually receives the top game of the week, while CBS and Fox also show desirable matchups, unlike ESPN.

ESPN is also paying a higher fee than CBS and Fox because they have access to all NFL footage to use for highlights throughout the week. The company could decide to try and pursue a deal that just involves the footage, instead of also the Monday Night Football game.

Monday Night Football ratings are up about 5 percent this year over last year, but is averaging only about 11 million viewers for its games, which is down from its successful years.

If ESPN decided to not renew its Monday Night Football contract, they’d be forced to find something else to fill air time. But, it will also save them at least $200 million.
