Steve Spurrier’s been around this game too long.

He knows exactly what he’s doing and almost every soundbite is a calculated tactic that serves his program’s best interest.

Since the Head Ball Coach spewed his disdain for ‘enemies talking negative about the Gamecocks’ last week, South Carolina has received commitments from four-star after four-star to move inside the Top 30 nationally for the 2016 class.

The influx of commits proves Spurrier’s still kicking on the recruiting trail and still has some swagger in the tank for a 70-year-old coach (he hates being called old).

South Carolina’s July commits for 2016

  • Marlon Character, 4-star, S
  • P.J. Blue, 4-star, LB
  • Jordan Smith, 4-star, DE
  • Tre Jackson, 3-star, CB
  • Akeem Cooperwood, 3-star, OL
  • Cecil Stallings, 3-star, DE
  • Will Putnam, 3-star, OL
  • Chris Smith, 3-star, CB

South Carolina wasn’t the only SEC team that turned in a red-hot July on the recruiting trail.

Ole Miss has added five players to a stack group currently rated No. 6 nationally and third in the league behind LSU and Alabama.

Four-star corner Jaylen Jones (Allen, Texas) announced his decision on Tuesday, picking the Rebels over in-state favorite Texas A&M. Other commits this month include four-star tackle Bryce Matthews, three-star guard Chandler Tuitt and three-star running back D’Vaughn Pennamon.

As it stands, Kentucky’s in line to land one of the most impressive classes in school history and the Wildcats keep adding to it. Nine players — four for 2016 — verbally committed this month, highlighted by top-rated JUCO tackle Tate Leavitt, who was wanted by several SEC programs including Alabama and Auburn.

In addition to Leavitt, three-star linebacker Kash Daniel, three-star pass rusher Kobe Smith and three-star athlete Zy’Aire Hughes all joined the Wildcats’ cause for 2016.

Mark Stoops also received commitments in July from four players in the 2017 class — Michael Warren (four-star RB), James Hudson (four-star DE), Craig Yeast II (three-star WR) and Mac Jones (three-star QB).

Kentucky’s biggest fish was five-star receiver Jermaine Eskridge from the 2018 class who pledged on Thursday. Keeping him committed for the next three years won’t be easy.

Florida landed four 2016 commits and three in the 2017 class in July, none more important than four-star linebacker Jeremiah Moon out of Birmingham, Alabama.

Dan Mullen and Mississippi State got after it with five 2016 commits, including three-star athletes Korey Charles (Tallahassee, Florida) and Nero Nelson (Hollandale, Mississippi). The Bulldogs have made a habit of signing as many players labeled athletes as possible and their versatility has worked out well during Mullen’s tenure.
