The top five stayed the same, but there was a major shakeup inside the top 10.

The biggest mover? Georgia. The biggest beneficiary? The SEC.

The Bulldogs pounded Mississippi State 31-3 on Saturday night, a victory so profound and impressive AP voters had no choice but react.

Georgia jumped four spots to No. 7. While jumping isn’t unusual, keep it mind it climbed over three Top 10 teams that won games Saturday. All three were from the Big Ten.

What does that mean? Here are a few takeaways from the Week 5 AP Top 25 Poll.

1. The SEC is in the best position to put 2 teams in the Playoff

Barring an upset, Alabama remains an unmovable No. 1. Georgia is set up perfectly to get to 7-0 for the first time since 2005 ahead of its annual clash with Florida in Jacksonville.

We haven’t seen anything to date that suggests anything or anybody getting in the way of Nick Saban vs. Kirby Smart in Atlanta. We haven’t seen much evidence to believe both teams won’t be undefeated when that game arrives.

If that’s the case, there’s a good chance the SEC will become the first league to send two teams to the 4-team College Football Playoff.

2. Wait a second, what about the Pac-12?

Just like the SEC is sitting pretty with two teams inside the top 7, the Pac-12 has two in the top 6. And just like the SEC, they won’t face each other in the regular season.

No. 5 Southern Cal is undefeated but hasn’t looked unbeatable. It beat Texas by 3 and had to rally to put away Cal.

No. 6 Washington opened the season with an uninspiring victory against Rutgers.

Style points count, and so far, the Pac-12 just hasn’t delivered.

3. The B1G fall

Penn State remained No. 4. It hasn’t played a ranked team yet and won’t until Oct. 21, when the Nittany Lions welcome Michigan to Happy Valley. A trip to Ohio State follows.

Regardless of what happens a month from now, it appears voters are slowly wising up on the Big Ten.

Remember, after one week of play, the Big Ten had four teams inside the Top 9, led by Ohio State at No. 2. Then Oklahoma pounded the Buckeyes, in Columbus, delivering a huge blow to the B1G’s Power 5 supremacy claim.

Recent weeks have compounded the B1G’s problem. There were several losses to Group of 5 teams, and Saturday, Penn State squeaked past Iowa 21-19. Michigan had to rally in the second half.

Without the early Ohio State loss that helped change the narrative, it’s hard to imagine Georgia jumping three Big Ten teams on a day that all three won.

The B1G’s biggest obstacle now is, thanks to its 9-game conference schedule, it’s out of opportunities to change voters’ view. The damage is done. It needs help, upsets in other conferences.

Could this be the year no B1G team is invited to the Playoff? Seems crazy, but if Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State split against each other and one wins the Big Ten Championship, Playoff committee members will remember what Oklahoma did.

4. Is Clemson the ACC’s only hope?

Clemson is the lone ACC team ranked in the top 10. Virginia Tech is next at No. 12.

As good fortune would have it, they play Saturday night in Blacksburg. Unless you believe Virginia Tech will go on to win the ACC Championship Game, a Clemson loss could wreck the ACC’s Playoff hopes.

Could the Tigers overcome a road loss? It’s possible, but that loss only looks OK if Virginia Tech continues to win. That’s far from a lock.
