One of Johnny Manziel’s biggest supporters is making it clear that he needs to go a different route if he wants to get back on track for an NFL career.

Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin has been on record for commending Manziel’s decision to enter rehab last year. At the same token, Sumlin also said there were things the Aggies “could have done better” for Manziel while he was in College Station.

On Monday, Sumlin expressed to Bruce Feldman and Stewart Mandel on FOX Sports’ The Audible that Manziel needs to take matters into his own hands now after being released by the Cleveland Browns earlier this month.

“Pro football is a job,” Sumlin said. “I know from his competitive nature, he loves the game. Without a doubt, there’s a lot of things going on in his life that if he’s serious about playing professional football he’s got to change.

“Whatever that perception is has become reality for him and he’s got to look that in the eye and say, ‘Alright, here’s a situation. Here’s what people think. … What are the issues right now?’ He’s got to address those.”

Manziel was a first-round pick of the Browns in the 2014 NFL Draft. His release from the team was expected once newly hired head coach Hue Jackson plainly stated that Manziel’s behavior wouldn’t be tolerated.

The 2012 Heisman winner has hired Drew Rosenhaus as his agent, who has said teams are still interested in acquiring the troubled quarterback.
